Multi-Tasking is Killing Your Productivity

Simplify your processes to amplify your efforts

As a marketer, your browser (and your brain) likely have way too many tabs open. On any given day, you probably work on multiple things at once to meet deadlines, satisfy clients, and impress your superiors. But switching between tasks, or multi-tasking, can actually cause you to lose up to 40% of your productivity per day. According to some estimates, multi-tasking can be more damaging than you think -- not only to your productivity, but to your emotional well-being.

Can multi-tasking really diminish my performance?

The simple answer is, yes. According to the experts, we think we can switch between tasks effortlessly to achieve more during the workday, but that’s not the case. Alternating between checking emails, toggling between analytics reports, and scheduling meetings creates a lot of opportunities for error – and it also wastes precious time.

Prioritize your tasks

It may feel like you can balance multiple things at once, but studies show that our brains can only process one cognitive task at a time. So what to-do should you tackle first? Mark Twain famously said, “If it's your job to eat a frog, it's best to do it first thing in the morning. And If it's your job to eat two frogs, it's best to eat the biggest one first.”

Plan your week, day, morning, and afternoon based on action items’ deadlines and level of importance. Just making a list will leave you feeling accomplished and motivated to knock out the most daunting tasks first. Designate specific time blocks to respond to email and social media messages, and keep your cell phone at arm’s length – and out of eyesight.

Unplug to recharge

As a digital marketer, much of your day is spent staring at screens and scrolling through smartphones. How can you not? It’s your job to be connected to the outside world. So it’s even more important to disconnect during your downtime and give your brain a chance to focus on one thing at a time. Practice leaving your phone in the other room while doing chores, cooking, or just sitting on the couch listening to music.
